Davu Seru - Percussionist/Improvising Musician
Davu cropped.jpg

Twin Cities resident and Native Son Davu Seru started playing drums in 1985, adopting "free improvisation" in 1998. At times he performs on cello, violin and, less frequently, soprano saxophone.

He's worked with numerous musicians, most noteable: Milo Fine, Andrew Lafkas, David Boykin, and Nicole Mitchell (someday he'll take the time to explain why).

He has taken part in local and national festivals, including the The Driftless Jazz Festival (Viroqua, WI, 2008), Twin Cities' Sur Seine Festival (2006), the Walker Art Center's Festival Dancing in Your Head (2004), the No-Net Festival of improvised music (Denver, 2002), the American Composer's Forum's Bamboo Fest (2001), and the Museum of Contemporary Art's Active Music Marathon (Chicago, 2000).

He has been a curator of concerts series that featured jazz, European and American improvised music, in both Chicago and Minneapolis. Those were the "Early Friday Out-Sets" at Hothouse in Chicago (1999), and "Unum" at the former Gus Lucky's Gallery in Minneapolis (2000-01).

He calls himself a jazz musician. To this end, he performs with The Tributary Jazz Ensemble.

He and his lovely wife, Emily, hold up in St. Paul, MN.
